چکیده

1. The variability of species combinations and membership assembly patterns in an insect pre-dispersal seed predator guild were studied at various spatial and temporal resolutions using presence/absence and abundance data in null models. The guild consists of seven beetle species (four bruchids and three curculionids) and one moth species that live on a perennial vetch, Vicia tenuifolia Roth (Leguminosae). 2. The seed predator guild varied considerably in the number of members and species combinations in space and time, and, contrary to expectations, there was no evidence of interspecific competition among guild members, supporting the view that other processes, including chance events, could contribute to guild formation. 3. It is concluded that, apart from the possibility of stochastic co-occurrence, it is the narrow host specialisation that constrains seed predator members to participate in the guild, and small differences in habitat preference can also lead to spatial and temporal variation.

Pre-dispersal seed predation by Bruchidius villosus (Coleoptera, Bruchidae) in Laburnum anagyroides (Fabaceae, Genisteae)

The pre-dispersal seed predator, Bruchidius villosus (Coleoptera, Bruchidae) destroyed ca. 8% of seeds of its major host-plant, Laburnum anagyroides (Fabaceae, Genisteae), a tree-like legume, in Hungary. However, almost 40% of the pods were infested by the beetle. Females did not show a resource concentration response: with increasing number of seeds per pod, the number of uninfested seeds also...

Seed-predator satiation and Janzen-Connell effects vary with spatial scales for seed-feeding insects.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS The Janzen-Connell model predicts that common species suffer high seed predation from specialized natural enemies as a function of distance from parent trees, and consequently as a function of conspecific density, whereas the predator satiation hypothesis predicts that seed attack is reduced due to predator satiation at high seed densities. Pre-dispersal predation by insects...

Allelopathic effects of rhizome aqueous extract of Cynodon dactylon L. on seed germination and seedling growth of Legumes, Labiatae and Poaceae Homa Mahmoodzadeh* and Mitra Mahmoodzadeh

Allelopathic effects of aqueous extract of rhizomes of  Cynodon dactylon L. were studied on seed germination and seedling growth of three legume crops (Phaseolus vulgaris L., Pisum sativum L., and Vicia faba L.), three Labiatae species (Thymus vulgaris L., Melissa officinalis L., and Mentha spicata L.), and two species of Poaceae (Avena fatua L., Sorghum halepense L.). Seed germination of all L...

New aspects of grassland recovery in old‐fields revealed by trait‐based analyses of perennial‐crop‐mediated succession

Classical old-field succession studies focused on vegetation changes after the abandonment of annual croplands or on succession after the elimination of cultivated crops. Perennial-crop-mediated succession, where fields are initially covered by perennial crops, reveals alternative aspects of old-field succession theories. We tested the validity of classical theories of old-field succession for ...

Pre-dispersal seed predation and seed limitation in an annual legume

In field experiments (1993–1998) using an annual self-pollinated vetch species, Vicia angustifolia, the effects of pre-dispersal seed predators (pre-DSPs) on plant performance and demography were studied. Insect exclusion by insecticides, vegetation perturbation at the start of the experiment by removing the top soil layer, and sowing extra seeds were applied at one site (Site 1) on 32 plots, a...
